Neurofeedback Therapy at The Mood & Mind Centre – Gold Coast, Queensland

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, or EEG biofeedback, is a non-invasive neurotherapy which helps you train your brain so you can enhance your brain health and improve your performance. It’s kind of like exercise, but for your brain!

It uses EEG technology to measure your brainwave activity and provide feedback in real time. This insight into your brain activity can help you have more control over reaching your goals.

It has been used in clinics for decades to improve performance and enhance overall wellbeing and alleviate symptoms of ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, traumatic brain injuries, emotion regulation, addiction, sleep problems and more.

How does neurofeedback work?

At The Mood & Mind Centre, we leverage cutting-edge technology, to deliver effective neurofeedback sessions tailored to your personal needs. Traditionally, neurofeedback required frequent visits to a clinic, making it costly and time-consuming. Now, thanks to new technology, there’s an easy-to-use, remote neurofeedback system that makes it possible to train anywhere using a wireless headset and mobile games and videos.

At The Mood & Mind Centre, our Neurofeedback Therapy is based on the principle of operant conditioning, a type of learning where behaviors are increased or decreased based on their association with positive or negative consequences. In neurofeedback, positive rewards (like clearer visuals and sound) encourage the brain to repeat desirable brainwaves. Conversely, when the feedback is less favorable (such as fading images and diminishing sound), the brain is motivated to improve and adjust its brainwaves.

Step 1: Neurofeedback Assessment

Your journey begins with an initial assessment conducted by your psychologist to evaluate your brainwave activity. Based on these results, a personalized neurofeedback program is designed to optimize your brain functioning.

Step 2: Neurofeedback Training

During your neurofeedback sessions, you will wear a headset equipped with an electrode placed on your scalp. This setup reads your brainwaves and transmits the data to the Myndlift app on your phone. During the session, you can choose to engage with a ‘game’ on the Myndlift app or stream content from applications like YouTube. The quality of what you see and hear is directly linked to your brainwave performance:

Frequency and number of sessions:
It is recommended to complete three neurofeedback sessions per week. After approximately 10 sessions, a reassessment will be conducted to evaluate your progress and adjust your program as needed to further enhance your brain’s functioning.
This structured approach ensures that each session is tailored to your specific needs, providing a targeted, effective path to improving your cognitive health and emotional well-being.

Step 3: Re-assessment and adjustment of training

Your psychologist will conduct a re-assessment to track your progress and re-adjust your training protocol to further enhance your brain’s functioning.

FAQ’S

What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a form of neurotherapy that trains your brainwaves to  achieve a healthier state – kind of like exercise, but for your brain!

Neurofeedback uses EEG technology to measure your brainwave activity  and offer you feedback on your performance in real time, through visual  and/or auditory cues from videos or games.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Absolutely! Neurofeedback is a safe, evidence-based therapy which has  been used for decades and poses little or no side effects.

Is neurofeedback invasive?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive neurotherapy. During your training  sessions, electrodes will be placed on your head and scalp to measure  your brain activity.

Are there any side effects to neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback training may cause very mild side effects, like slight  fatigue. However, these side effects are temporary and will pass quickly.  Similar to how your body feels after putting in a hard workout at the gym!

How does neurofeedback work?

When you’re doing a neurofeedback session, you will use a dry electrode  headset, with the option of an additional electrode on your head to  measure your brainwave activity.

During your session, you will play games or watch videos and receive  feedback in real time regarding your performance. This lets you know when  your brainwaves are in the desired state and when they’re not. Over time,  these training sessions will help regulate your brainwaves and allow you to  achieve your goals.

What can I use neurofeedback for?

Neurofeedback has been used to alleviate symptoms for conditions such  as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, addiction,  traumatic brain injuries, and more.

In addition, it has also been used to improve performance and enhance  one’s overall wellbeing.

How long is a neurofeedback training session?

Sessions typically last between 20-30 minutes, on average, depending on  your goals and program. Most treatment plans recommend 30-40  sessions.

What do I need to begin training?

To get started with training, you’ll need:

 • A training kit, complete with a Muse headset, external electrode, and   conductive paste

 • A device to train on, like a phone or tablet

 • An internet connection

 • A training program, customized by your mental health practitioner  • The desire to achieve your brain goals!
